{"id":101,"date":"2018-06-10T23:24:44","date_gmt":"2018-06-10T23:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talus-and-heavner.com\/aproposnothing\/?p=101"},"modified":"2018-06-10T23:24:44","modified_gmt":"2018-06-10T23:24:44","slug":"sciencemag-02018-06-01-highlights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.talus-and-heavner.com\/aproposnothing\/?p=101","title":{"rendered":"@sciencemag 02018\/06\/01 highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lots of good stuff in this issue:<\/p>\n<p>Katharine Hayhoe&#8217;s (@KHayhoe) has the lead off editorial that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/360\/6392\/943\">Facts are not enough<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; science is necessary, but not sufficient.\u00a0 Engaging with people and coming together rather than being divisive is needed.<\/p>\n<p>In the news &#8211; great news about Mars rover&#8217;s drill reviewed.\u00a0 Bad news about the ABI instrument on GOES-17 having problems with the cooling system and making the daytime IR observations fail.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/360\/6392\/954\">Galaxy Builders<\/a> talks about major improvements in galaxy simulations &#8211; cool!\u00a0 And then at a smaller scale, the update on planetary science about &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/360\/6392\/960\">Dunes across the Solar System<\/a>&#8221; describes the New Horizon observations that &#8220;Pluto joins Earth, Mars, Venus, Titan, and perhaps even the comet 67P\/Churyumov-Gerismenko demonstrating that the mobilization and self-organization of granular material into dunes occur throughout the Solar System.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From the academic world, policy forum looks at graduate education with &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/360\/6392\/969\">Student-centered, modernized graduate STEM education<\/a>&#8221; describing &#8220;central to the success of this plan will be a readjustment of the incentives that drive so many attitudes and behaviors throughout the graduate education system.&#8221;\u00a0 Lots of work remains!<\/p>\n<p>A very sad update on &#8220;U.S. budget targets fish and wildlife work&#8221; that the cooperative research units (CRUs) are getting removed from the President&#8217;s budget request.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/360\/6392\/1020\">The effect of partisanship and political advertising on close family ties<\/a>&#8221; is an interesting look at &#8220;politically divided families&#8221; and the impact on the length of thanksgiving dinner!<\/p>\n<p>Finally, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/360\/6392\/1028\">Ancient genomes from Iceland reveal the making of a human population<\/a>&#8221; confirms what we heard on our recent visit to Iceland &#8211; about 1100 years ago, many Scandinavian men went to Ireland and &#8220;found&#8221; (&#8220;borrowed&#8221;?)
