Have a fun (and healthy!) AGU

AGU time.  Busy and fun with another 15,999 geophyscists in San Francisco.  It is a great science-fest (new results from the messenger flyby of Mercury! more lightning! great glaciers and ice sheets! volcanos, earthquakes, space physics, plasma, climate change, seismology.  it just doesn’t stop!).  Live webcasts!  And great catching up with friends!  And some politicking.  And some good food and drinks!  And—a challenge.  Keep it healthy.  Rob and Matt are trying to run the AGU marathon.  This is to run 26.1 miles spread out over the week.  If we get desperate on Friday, we can estimate the mileage of walking back and forth between the Triton Hotel and the moscone center, but hopefully it won’t come to that.  Keep track with us in the comments to this blog entry.

Matt put in 6.1 miles Sunday around noon on the Triton treadmill (drizzly rain outside, feeling wussy…)

  1. I may have to reach into the walking from hotel and back–the week is getting busier! So maps.google tells me that the Triton to Moscone is .7 miles one way. Yesterday (Mon), I went down there, put up Roman’s poster, realized I forgot the 8.5″x11″ poster handouts, so walked back to the hotel, back to Moscone. I stayed down there for lunch, then walked back up to the Triton for wine hour. Then I walked back to Moscone for the Google evening talk. Then walked back to the Triton. So that is 6x.7 = 4.2 miles walking.

Run total: 9.6 miles, TOTAL: 13.8 miles

  2. Let’s see what I can scrap together…

Tues: down to Moscone (Cathy & Eran posters & atmospheric electricity posters) back to hotel. hotel to BART station (getting C&T at airport) and then back to hotel (w/ C&T) .7+.7+.5+.5 means another 2.4 miles walking

Run total: 9.6 miles, TOTAL 16.2 miles

Wed: down to Moscone (Nick poster!) and then meet C&T for lunch (with Brian and Lin, the Whole Earth smorgasbord then to the park for the sun). back to Moscone for the afternoon Tech Infusion session (I ran it). Then up to the Hotel to meet and catch a cab to the Walzwerg East German Restraunt Alaskan invasion.

So just .7 + .7 miles counted Wed..

Run total: 9.6 miles, TOTAL 17.6 miles

Thur: Mom & Taariq were delayed (supposed to get in last night). Legs are no longer hurting from the running earlier in the week–I could think about putting more miles in! (but end up not…). Walk to Moscone for my poster–I end up standing and talking the whole 4 hours–that should count for something! 🙂 Walk up to meet C&T for lunch (at the Cafe Micone or something, back at union square). Then back to moscone with Carrie and Torsten, then to playground. Head over to BART station to meet Dad. End up going back to Triton, meeting Carrie, going to BART, meeting Dad. Then I headed to the airport to meet mom & Taariq, then walked to Triton. We all went to Lori’s diner for dinner (w/ Rob). I’ll count all this as 2 round trips from Hotel to Moscone (.7×4 or 2.8 miles)

Run total: 9.6 miles, TOTAL 20.4 miles

Friday: close! Hotel to Moscone with mom, dad, and Taariq–got AGU guest badges, but the vendors don’t open until 9:30. Mom & Taariq go to the playground, dad goes back to sort out Hotel 480. I go to Josh G and Abe’s posters. We go to Union Square for lunch and then ice skating (that may have been at least .5 a mile, just in case I need it! :). Back to Moscone for Bill, Josh J, and Rob posters (and Dad came along for this). Also met up w/ Katie (UAS PR)–almost .25 miles just walking posters! 🙂 Back to hotel to meet folks, then back to Lori’s diner for dinner. So Hotel to Moscone round trip (1.4 miles), Moscone to Union Square round trip (.8 miles), and desperation skating at poster miles (.75 miles) for a daily total of about 3 miles.

Run total: 9.6 miles, TOTAL 23.4 miles

OK! We’re still in San Fran on Sat.. Walk from Hotel to St. Francis (Union Square) for going up and down elevator (to floor 31!) three times. Then walk to pick up rental car (.5 miles total). Drive to California Academy of Science (super cool! Torsten and Taariq had a blast. We met Tom & Waylon there). Walking around we got at least 2.5 miles in, so I’m claiming success!

Run total: 9.6 miles, TOTAL 26.4 miles — barely/walking.. but success in the AGU marathon, sorta. better run miles next year!

And we are still in the Bay Area Sunday and part of Monday! We got miles in Sunday (almost three hours walking around Fry’s with Tom and Dad!), and Monday we had to sprint from C9 to D7 in SEATAC (at least .5 mile)… We made it home through the Alaska Air/SEATAC madness.. Great trip, good to see everyone who was there.
